Restore from backup

I have Windows Vista and created a backup to an external hard drive prior to
conducting a system restore. I have re-installed Microsoft Office 2003 and am
trying to restore my contacts, emails and personal folders. How do I do that?

I did that but nothing happened. All my back files are on the my F drive but
I am unable to locate any .pst files within those back up files. Could they
have been backed up under a different file name?
