Restore the Normal.dot file

Version of Word 2003: I accidentally corrupted my normal.dot file which
contained numerous macros. Before messing up, I backed up that file
normal.dot file on an external drive. How do I restore that file so that word
recognizes it again?

Thanks in advance.

Close Word. Then copy the backup file into the folder
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates, overwriting the Normal.dot that's already there.
Then restart Word.

Step 1: Locate the corrupt Normal template on your computer.

Step 2: Rename the file to something like "POKEDNormal.dot".
You could just delete it, but it might contain something you might want to
salvage if you've made some changes since the you created the back up.

Step 3: Copy the back up version of your Normal into the same location of
the corrupt version.

Step 4: Move your macros out of the Normal and into a global add-in!

The Normal template is notoriously prone to corruption (and it's been my
experience that if it happens once, it will happen again - soon and
regularly), so it's best practice _not_ to store anything in it that you
don't want to lose. Global add-ins don't have the same vulnerability.
