I backed up my Outlook files and want to bring them back into Outlook. I
attempted to import them from the backup location only to be informed that I
don't have permission to do this. The whole point of backing them up was to
restore them after a recent upgrade of my OS.
Can anyone advise me how this can be done. I need to access the emails and
contacts.

Do not use the import feature. Simply copy back the pst-file from you backup
location to a convenient place such as My Documents\Outlook.
If this is from a read only location such a CD or DVD, make sure the "Read
Only" file attribute is not selected.

In Outlook, reconnect to your pst-file via;
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

Many thanks Robert.

I've tried opening the backups using the backup function and get the
following message:
...the file might be corrupted or not compatible with the current version
of Outlook'.
Since the version of Outlook has been reinstalled off the original disk from
which
the backup was saved, I can't imagine it is incompatible. I am horrified
that it is corrupted. I have lost hundreds of vital emails and contacts.
The file is saved on an external drive. Would it help if I place it back in
the original Outlook folder and can you through any light on whether it might
be possible to recover the files?
Best wishes
Sean

How did you back it up? A backup is not considered a viable backup until
a test restore is performed.

What happens when you ask Outlook to open the file with File -> Open ->
Outlook Data File?

You may want to work with a local computer expert to ensure that your
Outlook data is restored properly.

Robert, you are a saviour! Moved the files to Documents and managed to open
them OK. You don't know how relieved I am. Thank you so much for your help.
Is there anything I can do for you. I'll start by bookmarking your website.
Very, very best wishes, Sean

Hi Leonid

Thanks for entering the debate about restoring my files. Fortunately
Robert's advice (See thread) has worked. I transferred the backup file to My
Docs and it opened like a dream.
Thank you for your interest and response to my problems. Good luck, Sean Smith

If you are not able to access PST file or the permission is forbidde
then I guess it is something related to the registry file corruption o
setting which is being altered. This type of issue is very common whe
registry gets damaged due to viruses or execution of any arbitrary code
This problem can be resolved either by repairing the registry an
restoring the corrupted and damaged files of it or by taking the backu
of PST file and storing it in a safe and healthy location. To backup th
PST file efficiently you can use 'PST Backup' (http://www.pstbackup.com
software for fast and accurate backup.

All the best

Sorry, that's ABSOLUTE RUBBISH.
