Restoring icons

I am using a Mac Powerbook G4. I use Apple Mail. For about three weeks
now all Microsoft Attachments are showing up as a generic icons. I can
open them by selecting Open Attachment as Microsoft Word.
Double-clicking defaults to OpenOffice, which I do not use. Can anyone
point me to where I should start rooting around to resolve the issue.

I would suggest to reneview the association:
Close apple mail. In finder choose any *.doc document, evoke the properties
window (apple+i) scroll down to section open with and choose word.
Hope this will help.

Yes, this worked for the document in question but I am still getting
generic icons as attachments in Apple Mail.

Thank you, Beth. This was the step I missed out on. I have just checked
some messages in Apple Mail and now all the attachments are showing up
as Word documents. For some reason, the system had defaulted to
OpenOffice as my Word reader. Thank you all for the help on this one.
