Does anyone have access to detailed instructions on how to restore Project
Server and WSS databases to a server with a different name?

I want to migrate my existing server to a new one. I am running Project
Server 2003 and WSS. I cannot change the computer name on the new server. I
have about 10 projects on the old server and need to move all of them.

When I tried to restore it to the new server, the "ProjectServer" SQL
database was marked read-only and I could not log into the server.

I made sure the "MSProjectServerUser", "MSProjectUser", and the "sqluser1"
had the same password?

I know I am missing some steps here. What databases do I need to restore?
The Master and the Project Server?

I could use some help here. I would truly appreciate it.

Take care.

Why do you want to restore a database to a different server - there is
a great deal of information stored in those tables during install time.

If you are migrating to a bigger box, say, then you should export all
your projects to .xml files. Then load them and republish with the
second check box on the publish popup (the first is the send email
box). This will synchronize all the actuals to the PWA tasks
timesheets.

Thanks Mark. I appreciate your time and wisdom.

Migrating the database is what I see posted out there. This is the 1st time
I heard of exporting the existing projects as XML files.
I also have to migrate the enterprise resources, WSS (No big deal, nothing
is in there yet), and the custom views and links.

Again Mark, thank you.We all appreciate you time:)

Michael:

Sounds as if you made some errors in the restore process. This is fairly
easy to do with Project, but not so easy to with WSS. If you don't have much
to move in WSS, you can restore the database from one server to another
using a move technique. You must specify the specific file names during the
restore, and you must select the checkbox to restore over an existing
database and the checkbox to leave the database operational.

And how about migrate WSS database? I have about 200 projects and I need to
migrate to new server with new name.
Is it any tool for migrate WSS possible?
Or is it possible only rewrite url links between ProjectServer Project and
its Workspace in WSS in both databases?

Than you

A good way to migrate all WSS content data (sites, user configs an
all) is to move the database over to the new server and add it to a
existing WSS virtual server. On a new server this is how I did it

1. Restore content DB to new server (STS_etc…)
(don't bother restoring WSSConfigDB

2. Install WSS as usual (including virtual server

3. Add content DB to virtual server

WSS Central Admin->Configure virtual serve
settings->Manage content dbs->Add a content d

4. Specify database server settings
- Enter server and restored db name
- site level warning: 9000 (default for new dbs
- max sites: 15000 (default for new dbs

The only drawback to this is that there will be two content dbs liste
in WSS Central Admin, so I imagine new sites will go to the newl
created db rather than the restored db, meaning you'd have to migrat
both of these to a third server if yo
wanted to do this again

 I [u:e154ffa76c]would[/u:e154ffa76c] like to see a solutio
for bringing the Project Server database (configurations and content
over from one server to another (without naming the second server th
same as the first)

:?: Anyone know how this is done

Ok, figured it out. It's embarrassingly easy as its right in th
installation guide

 During Project Server installation, at the "Enter databas
server Information" step
- Choose "Connect to another existing database
- Enter the server name (local server name in my case
- Enter the database name (the restored database from the sourc
server)

My initial confusion came from the Disaster Recovery Guide, whic
seems to require that the target server (one which I've restored th
source server's database) has the same name as the source server. I
you want two servers on the same domain then this cannot happen.
have just one more thing I'd like to solve though

:?: Does anyone know how to merge two WSS content DBs? Now that I'v
added a restored content DB to WSS, it has two sources, the on
created during installation and the restored one. I assume all newl
create sites and configuration will be stored in the former, so I'
like to merge the two to keep things simple if I'd like to export t
another server again

Thnx
jang
