Restrict ownership change?

Marcus Pierce

It seems that all PMs who have read/write access to a given plan has the
ability to change the owner in PWA (under Project Center > Edit). Is it
possible to restrict this to only Admins? If there is a single PM with
read/write access, what if they go in and change the owner--have they just
blocked themselves from editing that plan? And what if they are not even a
resource in the plan but only have access because of this designation as
owner?

Thanks,

PMs also have access to projects defined by categories, so a PM could assign
another PM as owner and still have rights providing the category permissions
allow it.

I don't know of a way of denying the change ownership.

Marcus, I do not know if this will help or not, but in my organization
only allows Administrators or PMO groups to create a project. We set
"New Project" global permission to Deny for our PM group. Therefore,
if anyone selects "Edit" in PWA's Projects page, the Owner list will
only show Administrators and PMO members. The down side is that when
we need to change the Owner/PM to the actual PM, we have to change the
above permission to Allow then the Owner dropdown list will show
Admins, PMO and PM members. Once the Administrator or PMO changes
name, we change the above permission back to Deny. My organization is
different - we do not allow PMs to create projects or modify any
project other their own. Bottom line...it's the "New Project" global
permission that controls which names are in the Edit's Owner list.

Thanks for the information. It's interesting, that connection between the
"new project" permission and who is in the dropdown list. Do you know if
there is any way to turn off the "Edit" link in PWA altogether?

Thanks again,

We offer a solution to disable the edit detials function in PWA and grant
access to admins only.

We then offer alternative menu items, to enable PMs to change only a few
fields such as status.

This functionality goes on the track the changes in a change log.

We are available to assist you in setting up this feature

The ability to edit project owner requires a user to have "Manage
Enterprise Features" permission (slightly bizarre). This is not
normally allowed for Project Managers. So check your current
permission model. The "New Projects" permision determines the
population of the drop down list for plan owners.
