Restricted Access Web: Tools - Server menu grayed out

G

Guest

I am trying to follow KB article 301954 "how to: set up a
restricted access web using frontpage 2002".

I have published my web to a server running fp
extensions, converted a folder to a sub web.

When I go to the Tools - Server menu to change
permissions it is grayed out?

Any help would be appreciated.

Means you host doesn't allow you to do this.

No, they say that they run fp extensions and do not limit
my authoring in any way. They say it is a fp program
issue.

.....and you are doing all this on the live server with the online web opened
in FrontPage?

yes. I first tried it on my PC, but the tools-server menu
was grayed out. I thought it was because my pc is not a
server and I don't have front page extensions.

I opened my published web on the server that has fp
extensions. The menu is still grayed out.

Additionally I am logged on as master administrator of my
web site.

By the way, I opened the main web, and highlighted the
sub web in folder view to do this.

Then your host has NOT given your account the permissions need for you to
set permissions.

Each web host running the FP extensions can enable/disable certain functions
of the extensions for their client on a per account basis.

You must open the subweb, not just select it, then try.

Just so you know....even if your server does not allow you to set specific
restrictions....if you are logged in LIVE to your site, the option is there.
However, Once you try to set those settings, it will tell you that you
cannot set specific restrictions for your website via FrontPage, and that it
will have to be done from the server side of things. If that is the case,
simply log into your Control Panel and do it from there. It's rather easy,
and simple on most Control Panels.

Good Luck,
Carl

Since the Tools-Server menu is grayed out in FP when
logged in live to my site, I looked at my hosts control
panel.

They have a system to protect user access to a specific
portion of my site but they say that it does not work
with FP. In fact when I tried this anyway, the results
were too unstable.

They also have a FP area of the control panel that allows
me to allow user authoring rights to a subweb. But I
already have default authoring rights throughout the web
as master administrator.

Unfortunately there are no other FP security settings
available to me in the Control Panel.
