Retain format in word between PC's

I have an issue at my company regarding the formatting of
word (we use word 97), in that, the document can change
format between our consultants laptops and our office
PC's. I've ensured the templates on all PC's are all the
same but I'm also aware printer settings could affect the
documents. Whilst I know that if I convert the doc's to
PDF, I can retain format because both parties need to
amend them, that doesn't seem to be an option either.

Is there anything I can do to help retain format between
these PC's ?

Basically I am finding page breaks are moving and graphics
etc are not retaining their places so the document looks
vastly different to where it was originally created.

p.s. sorry it took so long to reply, everytime I came back
to the page, the dicussion group seemd to be down.

I guess the best advice is as provided by Suzanne

My perspective on this is that if you are moving the doc's because they
are completed/done and this is how you *publish* them, e.g. release them
to readers/customers ... then you should consider avoiding use Word DOC
format for this. Retain control/quality of your documents by fixing
them with Adobe PDF format. See www.adobe.com for Adobe Acrobat.

If you are moving the doc's because of collaboration with another author
.... maybe don't worry about details of formatting. Wait until it's done.
If you need to worry ... then ensure all authors use same printer,
same version of Word, same everything.

That being said ... still consider not worrying formatting details until
end of document writing. And at that point ... release in PDF rather
than DOC.
