Retain Original Numbering after Deleting some Numbered Items inBet

I would like to lock numbering in Word 2003, so that

after I delete items 1.2 and 1.3,

item 1.4 will stay at 1.4 (and not turn into the new 1.2).

Too many deltions to leave the old blank numbers in between - i.e. and say
"Intentionally Deleted" or "N/A" in each item I deleted.

Thank you!

John

To convert all of Word's auto numbering to plain text, press ALT+F11 to
display the Visual Basic editor. On the view menu, click immediate window.
In the immediate window, type
ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText
and press ENTER. All of the autonumbered text (numbered lists, outline
numbered lists, and LISTNUM fields) will become static text displaying their
current numbers. If numbering was applied with styles, you must also remove
it from the style definition.

This argues for using typed numbers instead of auto numbering.
I would like to lock numbering in Word 2003, so that
