Retaining Last Directory Used

I've recently upgraded from Word97 to Word 2003.
I create documents which normally use mmultiple images, and in Word97 when
importing images Word 'remembered' the last folder used to import images
from. This does not appear to occur in Word2003.
Can anyone confirm this?
I am aware of the settings within the Options for file locations, as this
was also the same in Word97.

It should retain the last used folder as long as Word remains open. Closing
and re-opening Word reverts to the setting in tools > options > file
locations.

Hi Graham,

This works fone in word97, but I cannot get it to function correctly in word
2003. At present the documents that I'm creating are around 75 pages, with
images on most pages, so therefore I would have expected this to retain the
last used folder.

I have also tried this with the folders containing the images on both a
local and network drive, but with the same result.

Is there any other setting which may affect this, as I had not closed word
between inserting images.

Hmmm. It works fine here, however I wonder if this is a Windows Explorer
setting?
Do you have its tools > folder options > view > advanced settings:
Remember each folder's view settings checked
and Launch folder windows in a separate process unchecked?
If that isn't it I don't know what the trigger is.

Graham,

Thanks for this, I have checked the settings and they are as you have
detailed.
I'm as much in the dark as yourself as this did work in word97, and I was
totally surprised by its apparent omission from Word2003.

I'll have a dig around and see if any other settings have been changed, but
as I haven't changed any settings between uninstalling Office97 and
installing Office 2003, i'd be very surprised if I can find anything.

Word will remember the last folder used provided that no path is given for
"Clipart pictures" on the File Locations tab of Tools | Options. If there is
a path there, the only way to delete it is through the Registry. The
relevant key is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options\PICTURE-PATH.

Good catch I thought that as I had changed My Documents in Windows to a
new location that I would have changed this location in Word, but seemingly
Word picks up the default location of My Pictures without further help.

Hi Suzanne, Graham,

Many thanks for this, it now works fine. I had to delete the registry
setting to clear the path, but Word does now remember the last location used.

This will save me a lot of work and frustration.

I keep dithering over whether I want to do this. My computer came with
Office XP installed and the picture path set (apparently), so it's still set
in Word 2003. Every time I have to keep changing the folder over and over
again, I think I really ought to delete that Registry key, but what I
usually end up doing is adding the currently active folder to the Places Bar
so it's just one click away. <sigh>
