Retrieving Deleted Access Dbase on Network

T

Todd

This may not be the correct newsgroup to ask this question
but hopefully someone can direct me in the right direction
if it isn't.

I had my access 2000 database stored on my personal
profile out on the network at work within a folder. I
unfortunately deleted the folder which had the database in
it and apparently if something is deleted on the network
it doesn't store the info in a recycle bin as it does on a
local pc. The operating system is Windows 2000.

The IT department pulled the backup tape for the previous
day and tried to reinstall that specific folder using an
application called Veritas. They have previously
retrieved other documents for other people that were
deleted and it works fine but apparently it's not
retrieving the access database. When it tries to retrieve
it the dbase it says to make sure the "Remote Agent" is
working. Does the Remote Agent have something to do with
Access?

They do not have the "Remote Agent" installed and didn't
purchase it so it's not working. Is there another way to
retrieve the database off of the backup tape or a way
around using the remote agent?

I do have an older backup copy of the database but it's
about three weeks old. I do backup the dbase weekly but
unfortunately (my stupid mistake) my most recent copy was
within the same folder.

I would appreciate any assistance I can get.

Hi Todd,

I can tell you that this is not the right newsgroup. You (or your IT dept)
may have to contact Veritas.

This is correct.

Access?

No. As a matter of fact, I think it has to do with the Veritas backup
software. In most backup/recovery system, the backup software backs up only
files on a particular network (i.e. Windows). Now, there are additional
features (sometimes they come with the software, sometimes they are extra)
called agents. Agents can be installed so that the backup software can also
backup other systems (i.e. Unix, Mac, etc). Another type of agent is used to
back up files on workstations (this might be what you referred to as "Remote
Agent").
But something is missing here. A backup/recovery system is a two-way street.
Everything else running normally, anything that's backed up can always be
restored. So, if the backup system asks for a "remote agent" to restore a
file, it must have backed up that file using a "remote agent". But you said
you dont have "remote agent"?

There should be. Again, if a file is backed up, it can be restored. The only
file that can't be restored is one that was never backed up <g>.
So I would ask your IT dept two things:
- Has the file actually been backed up? In other words, can they see it in
the tape?
- Can they restore using the "Redirect" option and restore the file to any
folder on the network?

Shame on you.. <kididng>
