retrieving prior versions of word documents

I accidently saved several word documents onto each
other. Is there a way to retrieve a previous version of
an old document? I am thinking of a function that might
act similar to the way that system restore acts but
instead of not affecting saved data, actually restores
data to a previous point in time.

Any help that is available out there would be very much
appreciated.
