I'm am used to the previous versions of word where I was able to insert
hyperlinks to bookmarks in the same (or other) documents, and used shortcut
commands in the ribbon of the document to 'jump to (bookmark)' and then
'(jump back) return' to the original hyperlink. However now I have word 2007
and can insert a hyperlink, but there is no information on how to return.

You can use the same keyboard shortcut for the Back command that works in
Internet Explorer and most other browsers: Alt+left arrow

If you want a button to click, add it to the Quick Access Toolbar: Right-click
the toolbar and choose Customize; set the dropdown to Commands Not in the
Ribbon; select Back; click the Add button; and click OK.
