Hi Chicky,

If you use File[Office button]=>Open the places bar should be in its usual place on the left of that dialog.

What are you seeing there and are you on Windows XP or Windows Vista 5384?

Hi Chicky,

So you're saying there isn't any part of the dialog with icons on it to the left of the File names in File=>Open?

If so, try running the Office diagnostics from
File=>Word Options=>Resources to see if it finds any issues with the installation.

I'm assuming you installed this yourself? It is possible for administrators to install Office with the places bar removed.

I'm sorry, maybe i wasn't clear. when the open dialog box opens, there is a
part to the left of the files that is titled "look in:' with a list of common
places used. but in wood 03 i had an option to add into the "look in:" an
icon of my commonly used places. in 07 i can't find any way to do this.

I don't have Word 2007 installed, so I can't say for sure, but in Word 2003,
there is an "Add to My Places" item on the Tools menu in the dialog; it is
available only when you have a folder selected.

In Word 2003 you used the Tool button at the top of the Open dialog to add an icon for your present location to the [My]places bar.

In Word 2007 you right click on the [My]Places bar to add the current location to the icon list on the bar.

Hi Suzanne,

Yes, that's correct the choices once you right click and select a blank spot the active choices are
Add [name of folder]
Large or small icons [the opposite of the current choice]

If you right click on an entry the choices are
Remove
Move up
Move down
Rename
Large or small icons [the opposite of the current choice]

The 'Tools' button is now at the bottom of the places bar
but no longer has the 2003 choices for 'search' or for modifying the places bar.

Hi Suzanne,

Yes, it works well once you 'discover' how to modify the Places bar.

Probably the easiest 'search for files' feature is to use WinKey+F <g>. I'm guessing that the 'instant search' in Outlook along
with some of MS's efforts on desktop search will be coming out to give more search features throughout Windows rather than just in
Office (but that's just a guess <g>).

Once you find files in Windows, using even the basic search function you should be able to double click multiple docuuments if need
be to open them and you can probably used 'saved searches' for common tasks/lists.

I've tried all the tricks I know, and they didn't work. :-(

If you're inclined to have a look under the hood, open regedit.exe and
work your way down to the key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\
Open Find\Places

There are two keys below that, StandardPlaces and UserDefinedPlaces.
Under each of those keys there are keys that define the icons in the
Places Bar. The UserDefinedPlaces are the ones you add, delete,
rename, etc. in the bar itself. The StandardPlaces ones are the
defaults.

Each key that corresponds to an icon has at least one value, named
Index, and some of them have other values. The Index is a number, from
1 to the total number of icons. You can change the order of the
standard places by editing the Index values -- something you can't do
in the dialog because the Move Up and Move Down menu choices are
grayed out for those icons.

But if you delete one or more of the StandardPlaces keys to try to
remove the icons, Word just puts them back the next time you open the
dialog. Resistance is futile; you will be assimilated!

On the plus side, if you increase the size of the dialog and use small
icons, you can get enough user-defined ones on to hardly notice the default
ones, at least one of which (My Documents) is useful.
