Returning a zero value in a subform text box if a query value it isbound to is null

Is there a way to return a zero value in a subform text box if a query
value it is bound to is null? When the query value is null, the text
box doesn't show up, and I'd like to have it there all the time.

Yes there is. Check this link to the NZ function. It should do what you are
looking for.
