Returning to 'factory' defaults

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel This form of Word is nothing like the ones that I have used in the years that I had a PC. Bought the Mac in Feb this year.
I have a load of questions but will start with this primary one and if that can be fixed I will drip feed the others!)
I don't know what I have done but in a scramble with the programme I now find that I cannot open the normal Word window (with the option of going to full screen or print by clicking on the 'spots' at the bottom of the page.
I decided to uninstall Office and reinstall it. But even though I have uninstalled it when I reinstall I get the same as before with the same window and the folders that same - even though I have saved the folders to the desktop. The fonts that I altered etc are the same.
How can I get back to the way it was when I first bought the progamme?
Frustrated (wish there were manuals these days) Popeye.

I suspect you're being thrown by the unfamiliarity of the OS X user
interface. We're delighted that it looks not much like Windows XP :)

Word 2008, on the other hand, is very similar to Word 2003. Yes, you're
right: it's not "PC Word" running on the Mac, it's a completely different
set of programs. But it works very much the same.

However: The user interface DOESN'T.

Go to Word>Preferences>View and make sure you have "Status Bar" checked. If
you turn that off (in either PC Word or Mac Word...) you indeed have no view
icons at the bottom of the Word window.

Welcome to the Mac: Let us give you a secret... Do NOT re-install things
on a Mac in an attempt to fix problems. The files that get damaged on a Mac
are not on the CD to be re-installed, so the best that you can hope for is
that re-installing will make no difference.

However, it is more likely that one or more software modules will get
replaced with ones that have not been updated, in which case, your problems
will get a whole lot worse.

There are rare instances where we might recommend a "Remove and Replace",
but that's a different procedure from a Re-install. If Word starts behaving
strangely, check with us first: it's very rarely needed, and if you do it
when it's not needed, chances are you'll make your problem worse.

Hope this helps

I shudder to think what I may have done. Will try out your instructions and see if it works.
I have not updated as when I asked for an update after re-installing it took forever (OK) but then didn't seem to want to install, just had me going around in a very time-consuming loop!)
Cheers!

The status bar is checked, John.
Still no sign of the window that I am used to seeing (and had before I did something stupid but am not sure what that was!) I think I was trying to put a file in 'Trash' and lost the whole window in the area around the trash bin. I could just make out a little bit of it and tried (and finally succeeded) and from then on the window has never been the same. :-(
Cheers!

John, I kneel at your feet in adoration! :)
Dunno why but when I just went to Word - it worked! The window that I used to see is actually there! Wonderful.
Now how do I sort out all the things that I have not done in the past two weeks while I wrestled with this problem! :)
KIND regards,
Popeye

Come back when you clear a hole in your busy schedule :)

There may be some other tweaks we can tell you about that may be beneficial
to a long and happy Mac life...

Cheers

Rest assured I shall return!
Much to your dismay, probably.)
Thanks again.
