Other than Bob's suggestion to get you to the last page, no, sorry there is
no way to get back to the point of last edit.
In previous versions of Word, Shift + F5 gets you to the point of last edit,
but they broke that in Mac Word 2008 and haven't fixed it yet.
You can, of course, remember to write something distinctive such as
##lastedit## into the text before closing, then search for that when
re-opening.

In Appleworks, whenever I returned to the file I had been using (eg the
manuscript I had been working on) the last page I had been editing would open
up. But in Word, it always opens at the first page of the document and i have
to scroll down many pages to reach the page I had been last working on.
Is there a short cut?
