Reveal formatting problem (Word 2004 Mac)

When I select Reveal Formatting everything shows on screen as it
should. When I deselect that menu option, I still get paragraph marks,
line breaks, etc but some formatting, such as section breaks, do not.
How can I get Word to behave correctly and either show all or none?

Mess with the checkboxes under Word | Preferences | View | Nonprinting
Characters. If you uncheck everything, then the ¶ on the toolbar should
turn them all off and on.

By the way--¶ on the toolbar is named Show/Hide All. View | Reveal
Formatting is something different.
