Reverse Publishing Website

R

rehanson342

I created and maintained a website with FrontPage 2000 for several years.
Recently I lost the supporting data (My Web on my C Drive). Is there a way I
can download the website to My Web on my C Drive without losing what's out
there?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

As long as the live/remote server has the FP extensions, open the site directly in FP and publish
back to a location on your HD.

Thomas, thank you for the reply. You're actually the guy who helped me get
started about 4 yrs ago, and hooked me up with Infoquest. Glad you're still
on top of things. I'm a little rusty, and not clear about the FP extensions.
How do I know my "live/remote server has" them?

D

David Berry

There's a couple of ways to know.

1. You could check with your web host
2. Try to open the site in FrontPage with File, Open Site,
http://www.domain.com and if it opens then you have them.
3. Open Internet Explorer and type in You domain name + _vti_inf.html

ex: http://www.mydomain.com/_vti_inf.html

If your site has the FrontPage Extensions it will say"

"FrontPage Configuration Information
In the HTML comments, this page contains configuration information that the
FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor need to communicate with the
FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server. Do not delete this
page."

R

rehanson342

Thanks very much, David. I tried your #2 and my File did not have an Open
Site option. So I tried your #3 and it worked exactly as you said. So my Site
does have the FP Extensions, and I can go ahead with publishing back to my
hard drive as Thomas suggested. I'll report if I'm successful....

R

rehanson342

Hallelujah! I have restored all the pages and images from the website to my
hard drive. THANK YOU, THOMAS AND DAVID! What a HUGE relief! I actually did
it using the File>Import function. HOWEVER, it's still not perfect. I have no
structure in Navigation, just the Home Page. And I have no Themes or Shared
Borders. It's all just the disconnected pages/images in black & white text.
What am I missing?

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

You need to Publish to get everything, not Import.

Open FP
File | Open Site
open your http://www.websitename.xxx this will open your web site "live"
from the remote server
then
File | Publish and Publish to a location on your local hardrive (it can be
named anything) Publish to a new location don't overwrite your other copies
just to be safe.

OK, I've dusted off the old cobwebs and recreated all the Themes and Shared
Borders. My hard drive is "whole" again with the website. I can proceed with
updating. Thank you Thomas, David and the invaluable Online Discussion Group!
Amen on this one!

If you are still with InfoQuest, then you have them.

OK, I confess, I made a mess out of re-creating the Themes and Shared
Borders. So from your instructions, I figured out how to open my website
directly in FP, then Published it back to my hard drive. It worked! You're
right, better than Import. NOW I can get on with updating the website. THANK
YOU!!

Ooops! Guess I'm not done yet........if you're still paying attention? After
I updated my Home Page on FP, I tried to Publish it, I ran into another wall.
It seems when I pusblished the website back to my hard drive, the folder name
remained the same as the URL (http://..........). So now when I try to
Publish back to the website, it won't do it because it thinks I'm trying to
publish it "back to itself." And it won't let me Rename the folder. Do I have
to start over, and then rename it?

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

huh?

If you Published back to your hd and you're running IIS the url would be
something like http://localhost/yourwebname
If you Published back to your hd and its a disk based web it would be
something like C:\My Documents\My Websites\yourwebname

If it's the first example just make sure you open your local web from that
address first THEN Publish to http://WWW.yourwebname.com

confused yet?

This is taking on saga dimensions! I have your second example: The address on
my HD is C://Documents and Settings/user/My Documents/My
Webs/http://www.hansonsouvenir.com. So I guess "disk based web" sounds
right. When I open that with FP and Publish, I get "tilt" and a statement
something like "You can't publish that back to itself" Now what? Stay with me
now........

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You have to remove the www and the .com from the folder name. Try renaming from Windows Explorer. If
that doesn't work then create new folder, then publish your local copy to this new folder, then you
should be able to publish to the live/remote server.

yikes.
do what Thomas suggests.
when you create a web on your machine it can be named anything Fred, Barney,
Dino...whatever...just don't use www, .com and especially http in the name.

At last, thanks to you, Thomas & Robb, I can really say I'm back in business.
I created a new folder and published the local copy of the updated website
back to it, then re-published it successfully out to the Infoquest server. So
I invite you to check it out at http://www.hansonsouvenir.com .
