Reversing back to normal style WORD 2007

F

Frenchie

All the styles mentioned are default styles.

I have a couple of lines using the style "STRONG" and I want to change it
back to "NORMAL". Once I have highlighted the line(s) I want to reverse
back, I clicked on the "NORMAL" style but nothing happens. The line(s) will
stay in "STRONG" style for some reason.

My question is why won't it change it back to "NORMAL" from any other styles?

I have found out a quick way around by clearing the formatting but why
should I take an extra step if "NORMAL" style is available as a click.

Strong is a character style. Resetting the paragraph style will not remove
the character style. Have you tried Ctrl+Spacebar?

Thank you for this work-around shortcut.

However, my question was WHY can't I switch back to 'normal' style from the
other styles by clicking on 'normal' style? 'Normal' style is the first
style in the style gallery thus by clicking on it, I should have whatever I
am writing turn back to 'normal style' but it just won't.

If it's not possible, then why is 'normal' style in the default style gallery?

I would like to know why can't I change by clicking on it.

thank you.

The gallery might be a bit confusing as it can contain styles of different
types. Clicking on a style of one type does not automatically undo an
applied style of a different type.

Paragraph styles are intended for paragraphs (including alignment,
indentation, distance to other paragraphs). Character styles are more tuned
towards font stuff (bold, superscript, ...). A paragraph has a certain
paragraph style (e.g. Normal) but all the characters within the paragraph
can have a character style (e.g. Strong) on top of them.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA011876141033.aspx contains some
interesting reading on styles.

Your paragraph is in Normal style, but Strong style has been applied on top
of it. Did you try selecting the text and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar? This will
remove the font formatting, leaving only the paragraph formatting.

Thank you Suzanne. The shortcut you gave me works great.
Thank you Yves. I have a better understanding concerning those styles. Now
I can finally move on.
