Reverying back to Office 2004 from Office 2008

I need to revert back to Office 2004 because Office 2008 Student Edition won't access my Exchange Server. How would I go about this while keeping my identitry?

From the last several posts in this thread, under "how to go back"
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...d7f938c0c09/5b9cd43909f48421#5b9cd43909f48421

2 options:

1) use Entourage 2008 to export an archive of your identity. Entourage
2004 should be able to open that archive. (File Export and File Import)

2) Your Office 2004 identity should still be in
username/documents/microsoft user data/office 2004 identities, unless
you deleted it. You can return to using it and redownload/re-do
everything you did in Office 2008.

Use the Remove Office tool (in Additional Tools in folder with Office
apps) to remove Office 2008.

I just installed Office 2008 (home and student edition) on my MacBookPro. I already had Office 2004. Now both are on my application bar at the bottom of my screen. Do I need both? Can I uninstall Office 2004 or should I put them in my application file on my computer (but take them off the bottom of the screen)? Please advise.

First of all, there is no harm in keeping both Office 2004 and 2008 on your
computer. Secondly, the icons in the application bar (technically speaking,
it's called the Dock) are only shortcuts; if you don't want to have the
Office 2004 apps in your Dock, just drag them out of there, and only the
shortcuts will disappear while leaving the original apps in your
Applications folder intact. This is a basic feature in Mac OS X: if you use
apps more frequently, simply drag their icon from the Applications folder
into the Dock to create a shortcut.

I'm not sure you would want to delete 2004 at this point. I did and I realize now that was a big mistake. Office 2008 acts pretty much like a beta. I can't register mine and every time I closs out an application I get a notice in regard to a problem in closing. This is bad. I guess we have to tell MS what the problems are before they will fix software we already paid for.

If you have converted documents over, try to recover them from a back up. This is worse than the problem experienced when Word 6 was introduced. I note there have been no upgrade fixes proffered yet. MS really does need to establish an R&D department.

Given that the first item you base your evaluation on is *registration*,
which has zip, zero, ZILCH to do with Office, one might wonder whether
anything else you wrote has merit.

Yes, the website is hosed. If you REALLY want to get an email newsletter
every month (which is the *ONLY* benefit that registration provides),
try this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/newsletter.mspx

OTOH, a problem closing sounds real, though not necessarily a problem
with Office. Haven't seen many, if any, reports of this, and IIRC, it
sometimes means your disk permissions are hosed.

Does it happen if you launch an Office app in another user account?

Does it happen with all Office apps?

Hi Gerald:

I understand your frustration and disappointment. And I agree that
Microsoft deserves a few whacks for this one. :)

However, I think we can help you out of your problems so far.

1) Don't bother with registration: its sole purpose is to sign you up for
Microsoft Spam. They will get the website fixed eventually, and if you
really want the spam, you can go back in a week or two and register then.

2) Your problems closing are "probably" being caused be previous bits of
Office X or Office 2004 still on your disk. Most likely, the Normal
templates.

Close AL Office applications, then do a search of your hard disk for the
Normal Template as described here:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

If you had Word X and Word 2004 on that system, there's at least three files
you have to find and trash: two copies of "Normal" and one "Normal.dotm".
Delete them, then re-boot.

Now, start Word 2008, create and save a junk document, then quit it. That
will hopefully save a clean copy of Normal.dotm. If it does, then you can
start the older versions if you still have them installed.

The key is to make Word 2008 create a fresh clean Normal.dotm before that
happens.

Get that far, then come back: if it's not fixed we have plenty else to try.

By the way, the software went on retail sale only two weeks ago. I would
not expect a patch for about three months from then. (We can both "hope"
for one, but it would be unwise to raise our hopes too high...)

Hope this helps
