Revisiting "Programmatically defining Member Properties"

Greetings,

A few months ago, there was a thread about programatically defining member
properties. I've thought about the problem for a while and just can't seem
to get around the fact that I'm going to need to create a cube to get the
member properties I need (my data source has not been a Cube till this
point.)

Before I start learning OLAP, has anyone had success with a work-around?
