Right-click on any cell instantly crashes Excel

This has been going on for a few months now. If I right click in any cell, Excel instantly crashes. It happens with all mouse devices I have tried on my MacBook Pro. This error also occurs if I right-click inside Word.

I followed instructions on this forum to delete a couple of Excel-related files, but that has not fixed the problem. Let's say I start a new sheet and just start typing in it. Then I right-click. My work is instantly gone because I had not saved yet.

It always asks me if I want to send a report to Microsoft. I have been clicking Yes for months now. The problem has not been repaired through 2 or 3 updates.

What version of Excel 2008 are you running?

Also, can you click on More Info in the Microsoft Error Reporting window
that comes up when Excel crashes and copy/paste the entire log into an email
and send it to me?

I'm experiencing the same problem, except I am unable to add or delete any characters in one workbook and can't add rows in a different workbook. For example, If I attempt to delete text in a cell, as soon as I press the delete key, Excel crashes. The workbook is not large - only 1.1MB and I have created models far more complex on a Windows machine as well as on the Mac, and I consider myself an expert user.

The crash happens with Office 04 as well as 08. I have done complete reinstalls of both office suites with no luck. I have also verified and repaired all disk permissions with no luck. I will paste the error log below. PLEASE HELP!!! I've spent a lot of time on this model and can't stand the thought of all this lost productivity.

Hmmm... the latest XL update (12.1.5) was finalized on 18 November 2008
(see About Excel).

That was 8 days *before* you posted your first message on 26 November
2008, it's hard to imagine what could have been done in that update.

What's going on, this thing continues to bite me and I continue to
lose work.

From the thread archives, I don't see that you replied to Pat in the ng
when he asked you about the circumstances surrounding your crash.
Perhaps you responded privately.

If not, please do so - you're probably not the only one that's
experiencing the problem, but you haven't given nearly enough detail
here to even start to try to diagnose the problem.

In the meantime, does this happen if you try it in a newly created OS X
user account?

I replied to Pat in the context of direct email, so he has plenty of information from me. I've sent him the stack dump that occurs. And I was talking to the metaphorical "Pat" as in "anybody on the Mac Office Squad". I'll address my letter more appropriately next time rather than call someone out.

As far as the problem appearing in a new user account, it does not. At least in my limited testing with the new account this morning.

It's also intermittent in my existing account. For instance, I can create a new worksheet, right click, and see the menu. But after I start typing, and want to highlight and insert or delete a row (for example) it disappears. In the new user account it works fine like this.

That points to a problem in your user account, not XL.

First place to look is preferences. Try renaming/moving/deleting

~:Libraryreferences:com.microsoft.Excel.plist
~:Libraryreferences:com.microsoft.office.plist

(where ~ is your home directory) and

Excel Toolbars (12)

in the

~:Libraryreferences:Microsoft:Office 2008

folder.

As John suggested, I was on vacation for the past few weeks. We are
continuing to investigate this, but we still haven't reproduced this crash
ourselves, so we only have one crash log to go on. Also, as John mentioned,
this could be an incompatibility with another application, since it doesn't
happen in a new user account. Still, we'll continue to investigate this and
look at other similar reports that come in.
