right click on cmd btn or macro btn, but no dialog box to assign control?

Thanks in advance to any and all help.

I am working on a workbook someone else wrote (who is hard
to get in touch with), and a worksheet has a button
(either command button or macro button I think) in it.

When I right click on the button to see where it is
assigned to, nothing happens (except a finely dashed line
around the inside border of the button, different than the
circles and shadow around a macro button when right-
clicked), no dialog box/window/whatever-you-call-it pops
up (the one with cut,copy,...,format control).

If I click on the button it runs a macro (but stops
because there is a VBA error). But I am still perplexed by
nothing happening when I right-click it. Anyone know
what's up?
