Right-clicking on large text crashes Word

Hello everyone!

I'm experiencing a problem with Word. Every time I'd select a large
chunk of text in Word and try to use the contextual menu or right-click
it, Word crashes. Now, "large chunk" is relative, depending on
individual documents. For sure, highlighting the whole document would
cause Word to crash. Sometimes, selecting just one-half or one-fourth
of the document would cause Word to crash, after trying to right-click
it.

I've already deleted preferences and the Normal template but still no
luck. Any help would be appreciated. :D

Does this happen with just one document or a particular set of documents?
Or does it happen with *all* documents? If you're not sure, create a new
document and type some "large chunks" of text in it. Does the problem occur
now?

If not, then chances are the problematic doc has some corruption. The cure
is here: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/DocumentCorruption.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Hello! :D Thank you for your reply.

No, I do not use that software. I'm currently using Office 2004 11.2
and I'm on an iMac G5 (iSight) running 10.4.3

It happens even with new, untitled documents... :( Would you recommend
that I reinstall Office?

No, not yet. And reinstalling Office only helps if you run the Office
Remover tool first.
You said you already checked preferences and Normal, but there are a few
other steps to check before going to Remove and Reinstall--e.g., add-ins for
Word, and startup items on the OS user account, and basic OS maintenance
like repairing permissions.
See what else is listed here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit reload a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
And not listed, but a good idea--check it in a different user account, or
hold down shift when logging into yours, which prevents startup items from
loading.
If you do wind up having to remove and reinstall, be sure to see the link on
the page above re best practice.

Oh, I see. Thank you very much for your help! I'll try those as soon as
I am able to do them.

As a side note, I'd like to say that this problem manifests in both my
iMac running Tiger and my iBook running Panther.

As a side note, I'd like to say that this problem manifests in both my
iMac running Tiger and my iBook running Panther.

That would kinda lead me to suspect a conflict with some other
program--e.g., an add-in installed in Word or an account startup item,
assuming you'd install such things on both your computers (which makes sense
to me).

Simultaneous corruption on both computers sounds unlikely, and if it were an
inherent bug in Word, I'd think we'd see more "me too!" messages on this
thread.

I've solved my problem! :D

I checked the troubleshooting link and read about third-party
installations. What immediately came to mind was the plug-in of my
Japanese-English Dictionary, J-Edict. I quickly opened J-Edict, opened
preferences and selected the option to uninstall the plug-in. The
plug-in was trashed then deleted by me. I ran Word, typed a page-full
of gibberish and right-clicked - Voila!!! No crashing!! I opened up an
old document and the same results manifested! Hooray!

Thank you VERY MUCH to all those who helped! :D
