Rights Management Services

I am trying to find the RMS in Outlook 2007 so if I send someone an E-mail
they can't modify it, forward it, print it etc. I've read the help
documentation but it's of no use. It still references 2003 stuff. Help?

Hi Dan,

The Information Rights Management (IRM) features in Office 2007 are apparently only available to folks who are using Office 2007
Enterprise products and have, as a minimum the Windows XP Rights Management Services Client+SP1.

If you are using one of those editions then you can use. If that feature is in place then, when you cick on the 'Office Button' in
Outlook while composing a message, you should see a 'Permission' choice in the menu there.

(Search for IRM in Help from inside the Office 2007 apps for additional details).

Bob,

Thanks. I did look for IRM in the Office 2007 apps as suggested and it gives
me the same information as previous.

I'm currently running Office 2007 Professional on a Windows Vista Ultimate
RTM machine. Everything that I have read says that they should be on these
versions of software. However, the best I can do is on Outlook the button is
greyed out and in word the button doesn't do anything.

Yes, the documentation seems to reference Office Pro, but it should say
Office Pro Plus or Office Enterprise, both of which require a volume
license.

For us regular joes, that apparently means we need to be using Office
Ultimate in order to get the IRM features.

See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101635841033.aspx (Yes, I
know it's not crystal clear here -- don't shoot the messenger.) There's also
a white paper that helps explain.

Please make sure you use the "was this helpful" to tell MS that the
documentation is wrong, otherwise it might never get fixed.

Echo,

This is almost clear. I'm running Office Pro, but the matrix on the web page
you sent says that Outlook 2007 isn't included in the Pro. But it was in
mine. Other than that, everything else was right. Weird.

Hi Dan,

Actually, the matrix is correct, if not clear to everyone <g>. The final matrix separates whether you get an Office 2007 edition
that is one of the following:

(a) Excludes Outlook 2007:
Home & Student Edition
(b) Includes Outlook 2007:
Basic, Standard, Professional-Plus, & Enterprise Editions
(c) Includes Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager Add-In:
Small Business, Professional, Ultimate Editions.

Business Contact Manager is targeted, along with MS Office Accouting 2007, to Small Business (similar focus to the Small Business
Tools that were included with MS Office 2000). The Business Contact Manager Add-in is a separate, optional install in the (c)
editions above.

Hi Dan,

In Table 2 of the document Echo referenced is the list of IRM features by version. All of the versions should, when presenting
items that have IRM Policy Statements and/or Restrictions, 'honor' restrictions from Office 2007 editions (ProfessionalPlus,
Ultimate & Enterprise) that can set policy statements and restrictions.

You're correct that the online and in product help files on IRM aren't clear and do not differentiate the capabilities by version
and these should be updated at some point in the product release cycle.

So in essence, the Office 2007 Professional RTM from MSDN doesn't have IRM
in it. Is there a way to download and install it or do I have to wait and
try and buy the other versions?

E

Echo S

I don't know of any way to install it separately, Dan. I think you will have
to wait for the other versions.

Patrick Schmid [MVP]

Check back on MSDN. Professional Plus and Ultimate are posted there.
Both of those should have the features.
