Roll up of custom fields

I have created a large master project with a number of sub projects.

I have several custom cost fields that I have rolled up to 'Sum'.

Everytime that I open the master project, roll up value on the custom fields
appears as an error. I manually am able to correct this by selecting the
column customizing the roll up to display maximum and then customizing the
column for a second time changing the roll up to Sum.

How can I correct this problem?

Barb,
I sounds like calculation (Tools/Options/Calculation tab) is set for
manual calculation. Change it to "automatic" or hit "F9" and your custom
fields should show the summed up values.

Thanks that seemed to work for the most part but when you open the master
project, the custom totals at the sub project level either appear blank or
with an error message. These are replaced with the correct values when you
open and close the sub projects.

Barb,
First, what version of Project are you using? Second, how did you create
the master (i.e. Insert/Project or WIndow/New Window)?

Just for reference I use Project 2003 Pro and have a test master with
multi-level inserted projects. I put a simple formula in Cost1 at both
the master and each of the subprojects. I saved them all to preserve the
formula. Calculation is set for automatic. When I open the master by
itself, Cost1 calculates for all levels.

John,
I am using 2003 pro and I inserted the sub project as 'inserted project'.
The error only occurs when the project is reduced to a sub project lists. I
can certainly manage this, it is much better then previous.

Barb,
I'm not sure what you mean by, "... reduced to a sub project lists." If
you mean that at the master level you only normally display the
subprojects as a summary line (i.e. not expanded), then yes, I might
expect rollup formulas in the subproject to show an error. This is
because, the formula for the subproject resides in the subproject not in
the master and if all that is being displayed is the subproject pointer
in the master, then the subproject is not yet opened and hence not
calculated.

I normally work with small test masters and the subprojects are always
"exploded", so calculation in custom fields always occurs.
