Rolling numbers

I would be grateful if somebody could help me.

I've been asked to come up with either a Word or Excel
document that allows a "Parts No." to increment my 1 every
time a new document is saved. So that no number is
duplicated & the numbers run sequentually.

I'm not sure this is possible without some sort of
background program, but would be grateful of any tips and
advice.

What's the relevance of the parts number to the document? Is it connected
with the document name? See if
