Roman page number in TOC

Question:
How do I get the page numbers in my TOC to show up as Roman numerals.
I'm sure it's simple and I'm just missing something basic.

Background Info: I have 1 document with 3 sections. The first section has
no page numbers displayed, the second section has roman numerals and the
third section has arabic numerals.

I have inserted and formated the table of contents except the page numbers
are all showing up in arabic both sections 1 and 2. I set my page numbers in
the header in section 2 using the field code - PAGE \* roman.

Any help would be appreciated.

With the cursor in the Section 2 header, click the Format Page Number
button on the Header toolbar (the one with a hand holding a page). In
that dialog, set the Number Format dropdown to "i, ii, iii..." and
click OK.

You can go back and remove the \*roman switch from the PAGE fields --
it isn't necessary.

Thanks Jay,

I figured I'd done something wrong when I formatted for roman.

I got the roman numerals to show in the TOC, but I ran into another problem.
I am using Times New Roman with smallcaps font in the TOC, as a result, the
lower case roman numerals i, ii, iii, appear in caps I, II, III.

Am I out of luck on this one?

Hi Teresa,

You can force the page numbers to lower case, but it's going to be a
PITA because it'll have to be reapplied each time the TOC is updated.
Assuming you have only a few roman-numeral entries in the TOC, this
may be acceptable.

Define a character style, with a name like TOC Page. Make it Default
Paragraph Font + small caps. That is, in the New Style dialog, click
Format > Font and check the Small Caps box. Don't touch anything else.

In the TOC, select each page number and apply the TOC Page style.
(Speed tip: apply the style to the first one, then select the next one
and press F4 to repeat. Unfortunately, the Alt+drag column select
doesn't work here; trying to apply the style to all the page numbers
at once fails.)

It seems anti-intuitive, but applying a character style that includes
small caps on top of a paragraph style that also includes small caps
will cancel out and leave you with lower case. When the TOC field
updates, though, the character style is removed and needs to be
reapplied.

Thanks Jay,

I thought I would just have to do the lower case roman numerals by hand at
the end. I tried highlighting the roman numeral in the TOC and clicking on
the small caps button and that worked, so I'll wait until I'm done and switch
them.
