root directory/favicon.ico?

Am trying to add my favicon.ico file to my root directory to achieve result
of custom icon for bookmarking. I have my appropriate graphic & it's saved
as a .ico file......BUT.......as crazy as it sounds I just don't understand
how I get it from my desktop to my root directory? Can someone please spoon
feed me and tell me which buttons to push? Is my root directory simply my
"local website" or is it my "remote web site"? Thanks!!

The root folder or root directory is the "folder" that contains your website.
Copy and paste your favicon.ico file into the same location as your "Home" page and then publish
your web to the server.

upload the file to your "home" directory on the server "root" directory is the
"home" directory.

"root directory" comes from early MS-DOS or even Unix days e.g. C:\ is the "C
drive root directory".

it refers to the 'base' or 'home' directory on a computer.

directory = folder = same difference.

Thank you so much!! I understand now, and this morning I was successful and
got the file imported over to my root directory, published, and all was well.
I tested it out, and sure enough my icon showed up when I bookmarked my
site.

Unfortunately, it was short lived! About two hours later the icon
disappeared from the bookmarked link, and the regular blue 'e' was back.

Does anyone know why this would be? I have checked and all is the same
concerning my site & files.

Your favicon may be there but you do not have it identified in the head section (of each page) using
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="youriconfilename.ico">

By any chance did you clear your browsers History and Temporary Internet files??
That will make it "disappear."
