Root Level of Site Directory

I am a newbie and want to upload a file at the root level of my site directory.

I have FP open, but don't know how to find the root level of the site
directory. Can someone please tell me how to locate it, then how to upload a
file?

1) you need a FP site/web open to Publish (upload) - not just a page
2) the root level is the top level (under your web name you open or publish to
