Rotating inserted pictures

I frequently need to insert pictures into Word documents,
usually taken from Excel -- a chart, or a financial
model. Because I do NOT want the data to update
automatically, and wish to keep file size down, my
preferred method is to use Edit > Paste Special > Picture
to insert a picture originally extracted from Excel using
Shift-Edit > Copy Picture.

The problem is this: my Word documents need to be in
portrait format to be consistent with graphiucal
standards, with headers and footers that include page
numbers at the top and bottom of each portrait page. The
pcitures, however, are very "wide", and would work best
rotated by 90 degrees so that I am not limited by the
width of the page and don't have to scale them down so
that they are illegible.

Unfortunately, you cannot rotate a picture object, or at
least, I don't know how to. Any suggestions?

I beleive there is a rotate tool you can use in the group of drawing tools. As you pass over each icon symbol the label will display to find it. The tool shows handles that you can click and drag to rotate your picture.

As mentioned in my original post, inserting a landscape
section does not work since the headers and footers will
now be in the wrong place (along the "long" side of the
page and not at the top and bootm of a portrait-oriented
page).

I am curious as to your comment that "some versions of
Word" allow you to rotate picture objects. Which?

There IS a Rotate tool, but it does not work with Picture
objects. Try it and see! As far as I know, it only works
for items added with the Word drawing tools (i.e.
Autoshapes)

Once you paste your Excel object as a graphic object... have you tried then
copying that to a Graphics program (you can download a trial version of
PaintShopPro at www.jasc.com -- and rotatiing it there -- then returning it
to your Word Document? It will work --the real question is whether or not
it will diminish resolution to where the quality is unacceptable. But it's
worth a try. (I tried in MS Paint -- but while in theory it worked --
couldn't get it to display the entire Excel area without a ton of work.

Good Luck...
