Row and columns labeled both as numbers, not letters

In excel 2003, today when I opened the application both the rows and columns
were labeled as numbers. So instead of having cell A1, I have cell 11,
instead of B1, I have 21, etc.
Has anyone seen this and do you know how to get the letters to reappear on
my columns?

Tools > Options... > General and then clear the R1C1 reference sytle checkbox.
