row of dots

In the middle of a word processing document there have appeared, at several places, a horizontal row of black dots, in boldface, across the page. I can't figure out what I did to bring this about, or how to eliminate it. Presumably, I've introduced some type of divider or section marker, but I can't fathom what it was. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks,
Timothy

I suspect it's the thing where you type *** and Word helpfully turns it
into a border for you.

To get rid of the dots, select the row and the text around it, and in
Format | Borders and Shading, set Borders to "none."

To prevent them from occurring in the future, go to Tools | AutoCorrect,
AutoFormat as You Type panel, and uncheck the box to apply "borders" as
you type. (Well, you might want to uncheck more than that, but I think
that's the one causing your issue).

If that doesn't work, give more information so we can figure out what
else it might be.
