RPC over HTTP on Vista

Hi there,

I've been researching this problem for a while and while I've found a bunch
of information and things to try, I haven't found a solution.

I have a brand new Vista machine on which I'm trying to run Outlook
Anywhere/RPC over HTTP in cached mode, preferably with Outlook 2007, but it's
not connecting. I consistently get the error "Cannot open your default
e-mail folders. You must connect to Microsoft Exchange with the current
profile before you can synchronize your folders with your offline folder
file."

It's running off a 3rd party server and I have put in a request with them,
but their support is mediocre at best. That having been said, I do have
other machines with this setup and they are working fine as far as I know.

If I disable cached mode, then I get a different, but similar error stating
that it can't open my default folders.

When I run Outlook /rpcdiag, I find that it connects to the Directory, but
it does not connect to the Mail or Public Folder servers/services.

Things that I've tried:
- Added in the reg key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC
and DWORD DefConnectOpts with value of 0.

- Also added in EnableRPCtunnel with value 1.

- Gone over every permutation for the Proxy settings in the Email Settings,
including switching from NTLM and Basic Authentication.

- Turned off the Vista firewall and UAC.

- Ran netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable

- Ran netsh advfirewall set global statefulpptp disable


- Put the server in the Trusted Sites list in the Internet Options and
dropped the security for that Zone down to low

- Uninstalled Outlook 2K7 and installed Office 2K3

- Tried a different user profile.

- Delete and recreated the mail profile multiple times.

None of these, of course, have worked so far. I'm convinced that it's a
Vista issue (since Outlook 2K3 also had the problem) but I can't any where
where I can track the RPC traffic to confirm what is blocking it.

The only firewall installed is the Windows Firewall, although the Symantec
AntiVirus corperate client is install as per our standard.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does it work when you uninstall Norton and verify that it left no traces in
Outlook?
What is your required configuration? Basic or NTLM?
We're always on a remote network and have found that setting the option to
always first try to connect via HTTP even on fast networks improved
connection speed and reliability on some machines.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the reply. I have removed and reinstalled Symantec/Norton, but
didn't run their "cleaner" so I'll try that.

I'm supposed to use Basic, but I figured NTLM wouldn't be hard to try.

Just to follow up. I removed the Symantec Anti-Virus, ran the Norton Removal
Tool and it still does not work.
