rpcrt4.dll error installing Sharp OZ-290H Wizard Software

I have a Windows XP Professional SP2 PC. I have Outlook 2003 SP1. Call this
computer A. I have a Sharp OZ-290H Wizard electronic organizer. I am trying
to install the software that comes with the organizer to synchronize
calendar, contacts, etc between Outlook and the unit.

I have a second computer (computer B) in my office on which the software
will load and will work to satisfaction. It has Windows XP Home and Outlook
2002.

I have approached Sharp (repeatedly) with this issue and they will not
address it to satisfaction. They say it will work on computer B and
that should be good enough for me. They say they can't guarantee the
software wil load on all types of configurations because there are 'just too
many' (whine, whine). However, due to circumstances, I must load this
software on computer A for it to be useful to me. I do not know where to go
next.

When I attempt to install the software I receive an error box from the
installer launcher saying there is an issue. Pressing the 'more information'
type links indicates an error with:
ModName: rpcrt4.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 000133c3

There is further error report information however I do not know if it would
be useful to put in this posting at this time.

I'm wondering if this is one of those silly issues that could be solved by
copying a newer version of the rpcrt4.dll file to one of the directories.
However, I don't know enough to feel confident doing that myself. I don't
want to mess anything up.

Are there any experts out there who think they can solve this issue for me?

I'm wondering if this is one of those silly issues that could be

the directories. However, I don't know enough to feel confident doing
that myself. I don't want to mess anything up.

You shouldn't hurt anything by trying. Just make a copy of the existing DLL
and drop in the later one. Worst case you'll have to put things back and
possibly reregister the old DLL.

Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by 'reregister the old DLL'? Is
there some procedure to follow other than just copying and renaming using
Explorer (or similar function).

Using the DLL Registration application regsvr32.exe is what I mean by
reregistering. SOme DLLs need it, some do not.

OK. So I have searched on both Computer A and Computer B for rpcrt4.dll files
and checked the dates and version numbers of all found. I think maybe I need
the reverse. An OLDER version of the file not a newer one.

I'm guessing because Computer A (the one I want to install the software on)
was upgraded to XP SP2, it has a new version of the file (ver 5.1.2600.2180,
dated 8/4/04). This version number matches the information in the original
error message from the Sharp installation process.

On each computer I found four versions of the file, in different folders.

On XP Professional (computer A) I found:
c:\windows\$ntsvcpkuninstall$ (ver 5.1.2600.1361)
c:\windoes\$ntuninstallkb828741$ (can't tell ver but is definitely older)
c:\windows\system32 (ver 5.1.2600.2180)
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 (ver 5.1.2600.2180)

On XP Home (computer B) I found:
c:\i386 (ver 5.1.2600.1230)
c:\windows\I386 (ver 5.1.2600.1230)
c:\windows\system32 (ver 5.1.2600.1361
c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download\xxxx(yuck!) (ver 5.1.2600.2180)

So I'm wondering if I copy ver 5.1.2600.1361 over ver 5.1.2600.2180 on
computer A (in both directories) if I am really going to hose something up.
I'll kind of be reversing (I think) some of XP SP2. I guess I'm a bit of a
fraidy cat. I'm afraid I'll change something and won't be able to recover.

Input? Suggestions? Any more information needed?

Make a System Restore point prior to replacing the DLL. If something screws
up, you can restore.
