Rule suddenly stopped working

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: pop A rule on one of my email folders just stopped working suddenly. Now missives that were formerly directed to this folder show up in the regular INBOX. How do I correct this? And how do I launch the auto check that would see if Entourage needs to be updated or there are new security alerts, etc. Occasionally this will launch on its own, but how do I force it to check.

Occasionally a rule will become corrupt or reset the folder destination. I'm
guessing another option is you accidentally created a Mailing List Manager
rule and since it runs first it's moving your messages. Check the Mailing
List Manager under Tools in the Menu bar.

Under Help in the Menu bar select "Check for Updates". When the window opens
you can select Check for Updates.

Thanks. I will check this out. But how do you deal with a corrupted rule? I don't think I ever set a Mailing List Manager, but will check.

No, no mailing list management was created, I just checked.

Let’s be doubly sure. Under Tools in the Menu bar select Mailing List Manager . It’s a type of Rule. We’ve had so many say they didn’t see it, but after a second look, they found the Mailing List Manager rule.

Delete the Rule and recreate. It’s possible you will have to delete the Rules file in your Identity.

Hi Diane

here's what I see:

http://i48.tinypic.com/3442pns.png

I then deleted the rule in my regular list of rules and created a new one, but then it still does not work (for incoming or outgoing mail to that person). So strange how all other rules work but this one.

I have hundreds of rules for dozens of email clients, I'd go into a seizure if I had to recreate them all. (Is that what you mean by deleting the Rules file in my identity?)

Rules run in the order listed. First test the rule by selecting a message
and Control click to select Apply Rule > select the rule. If it runs then
the rule itself is OK. Select another message and Apply Rule > All rules.
Does it run? If no, then it's a rule above it that is acting on the message.
Move the rule higher in the list.

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

1) POP Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the Inbox (On My
Computer), NOT when it arrives in any other folder. Once it's moved to
another folder it won't be seen by rules.

2) IMAP Rules are meant to act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in
the IMAP INBOX, not when moved to another IMAP folder.

3) Exchange Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the
Exchange Inbox.

Each type of account has it's own rules. Click on the correct tab to check
your rules. (Mail (POP), Mail (IMAP) Mail (Exchange), News,
Outgoing)

(Windows Live Hotmail is now POP)

See "Using Rules with Entourage" for help and examples:

I have hundreds of rules for dozens of email clients, I'd go into a seizure if
I had to recreate them all. (Is that what you mean by deleting the Rules file
in my identity?)

Yes, it's a huge PITA.

Have you looked at using categories to help manage your rules?

Hi Diane

Wow, talk about feeling like an idiot. Despite my embarrassment I thought I'd share this with you as it might help someone else out in the future to.

The reason the rule quit working on that folder? It had accidentally gotten moved into the TRASH. I of course kept seeing the name for the contact in the 'tool bar' above the view pane, so wasn't aware it had gotten trashed.

Anyway, there it is.

Thanks for your help.

That happens to us all. Glad the problem is fixed now.
