Rule to Mark Sent Items As Read When Copied to Another Folder

Question:
Is it possible to create a rule that automatically marks sent items copied
to another folder as read?

Background:
Recently I had some trouble locating sent mail from last year. I found out
from our IT department that all items in the default Sent Items folder
(stored on the Exchange Server) older than 180 days are automatically
deleted. That's caused some problems, but the policy will not be changed.

I set up a rule to move all sent mail to another folder. When items are
automatically copied to the Sent Items folder using the Tools-Options-Email
Options window they are automatically "marked as read". However, when they
are automatically moved to another folder upon sending, they are "marked as
unread." I have only been able to manually select them and mark them as read.

The option to "mark as read" for rules when receiving an e-mail does not
show up in the rules wizard for rules when sending an e-mail. Any suggestions
for getting these sent e-mails I copy to another folder to automatically
display as read will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

i had a similar problem, well less a problem - the 'unread count' on
the outlook bar was just annoying me. I found this:
www.kensheppardson.com/2006/06/05/outlook-sent-items-hack/ which works
a treat.

Use it in place of any rules; it will just move anything out of the
sent box and into the inbox (it can be adapted to pick a folder of
your choice). That means you can leave the 'save copies in sent box'
option in outlook turned on which appears to be the only way to get a
sent message to appear as read in a folder of your choice.

Happy hacking!

Hello Rob - thanks for the response. I've haven't had a chance to try it but
looks like it should work. For the time being I'm still right clicking on the
folder every so often and selecting mark as read, the manual method.
