Ruler bar

I recently installed Office XP Professional over Office
2000 Professional. When I open word, the ruler bar does
not show inches, but numbers (in brackets) in increment of
2. I tried to change from inches to metric, to picas and
points to no avail. When I go to Format/Paragraph, the
Indentation feature shows increment of ch, not inches.
Please help!
