Ruler Bar

On two of my computers in my classroom, the ruler bar has
changed. It is still measured in inches but it displays
in something else. When you go to set a tab, in the spot
where you type the measurement, it has "ch" where I want
to type the # of inches. What next?

Hi Becky,

Word, XP, I presume? If you have an East Asian language enabled, there
is an option on the General Tab of the Options dialog box to "Use
character units" which causes the ruler and all things measured by it to
be measured in characters.

To turn it off, select Tools in the menu, then click Options. Click the
General tab, clear the checkmark from "Use character units" and click
OK.

If you do not have the "Use character units" option, you need to exit
Word, then use the Start -> Programs menu to run the Microsoft Office XP
Language Settings tool and enable an East Asian language (e.g.,
Chinese). When you restart Word, you will have the "Use character
units" option available.

If "Use character units" is not on and you are still measuring things in
characters, your Word Data key is probably corrupt and you will need to
edit the registry and delete it.
