Ruler unit problem in MS Word

After installing Office XP, the horizontal and vertical
rulers in MS WORD display in ch units (not inches, etc.).
This behavior cannot be changed from the Tools - Options
menus. Additionally, the TAB and Paragraph formatting
menus also display in ch units.

Uninistalling and reinstalling Office XP does not solve
the problem.

Can anyone help.
