Rulers Block Documents, Arrrgggh!

F

Hi all,

For reasons unknown to me, both standard and custom rulers now block
the tops of all my documents. It used to be the docs would
automatically moved down to make way for the rulers. No longer. Since
the rulers cover the tops of the docs where one can drag them down at
bit, this is really annoying. Can anyone help me get things back to
normal? I've deleted the Word prefs and the .plist and neither has
helped.

Please, if you can, give me a tip to try here!

Thanks,

Franz

Hi Franz -

The first thing I noticed is that you are 2 updates behind;
MS Word 2004 version 11.1

Updating to 11.3 may help, & make sure to use Disk Utility to Repair
Disk Permissions when you do. Post back if the problem persists.

Hi Franz,

When you say rulers, do you mean toolbars?

If you mean toolbars, then they are very slightly undocked. Or the document
might be undocked--there *is* supposed to be an annoying gap between the top
of the document and the bottom of the toolbars. If you try to close that
gap, everything gets all messed up.

Usually I float toolbars or document around really carefully until they seem
to drop into a little spot and lock there. This works better than it sounds
like.

I'm surprised deleting prefs didn't work--by the way, better practice to
just drag the files to the desktop, and then you can put them back if new
ones don't fix the problem. I assume you quit Word, moved/trashed the
prefs, then relaunched it?

Fortunately, you can get the documents out of where they are:

Window > Arrange all will automatically move them below the toolbars,
and either tile or cascade them. Then you can move them where you want.

Everyone,

Many thanks for the various advice you all gave me this evening. I am
pleased to report that--for reasons as unknown as those that caused the
problem in the first place--the problem has vanished. I suspect it was
out of simple fear of your mighty knowledge. I did, though, resize and
re-place the custom toolbar I use above docs (and which was giving me
trouble). No doubt that contributed. Of course the trouble may return,
but I will be careful to again adjust toolbar (it *was* toolbars I
meant) positioning in the future. Further, I am pleased to learn of
"arrange all," which I'd never noticed, before. And finally, I hadn't
thought about updates for ages. I'll make sure to download the latest,
asap.

Sincere thanks to everyone,

Franz
