Rules in Entourage

What is the possibility to eliminate a 'hidden' rule that I have eliminated
from my rules some time ago. It always pops up when I start Entourage and
execute Send/Receive the first time. Is there a way to find the file
location that contains that rule?
Any tips? (I am using Office 2004 on an iMac Intel Core Duo).
Thanks in advance.

That's a Schedule, not a Rule. Check Tools > Schedules and see if any of
them are set to activate when you launch Entourage.

I am sure there is a rule since I had set up that rule some time ago and
since have deleted it from my list of rules. Consequently it does no longer
show up in the rules list. However, I get an error message when I start
Entourage (after a shut down) 'that the rule can not be executed' because it
cannot be found. Since I cannot find that rule either I am wondering where
is this "hidden" request/message coming from? Obviously, this is weird but
to my knowledge everything in software must have some reason behind it.
Next time I will copy the screen with the error message. Pl. stay tuned.

I see, I misunderstood what you originally wrote.

Check all of the tabs on your Rules window - Mail (POP), Mail (IMAP), Mail
(Windows Live Hotmail), Main (Exchange), News, and Outgoing. You may also
want to try rebuilding your database by holding down the Option key when
launching Entourage.

Hi Adam,
Unfortunately the database rebuilding did not eliminate the phantom message.
Here is the error description:

Error: <The mailing list rule "(e-mail address removed)" could not be
successfully executed.>

Explanation: <The message could not be filed because the destination folder
cannot be found.>

I wish there were a way to eliminate the account but save all my current
settings and the Entourage address book without keeping the old rules list.
Thanks anyway. I probably have to live with this weird case.

Quit Entourage.

Go to your Documents folder > Microsoft User Data > Office 2004 Identities >
Main Identity (or whatever it's called).

Locate the file called "Rules" and drag this file to the Desktop.

Now launch Entourage. See if you have the problem. If all is working, you
can safely delete the Rules file.

Check Tools > Mailing List Manager and make sure that the rule is not there.

Aha, direct hit, Mickey! That's the location where that infamous rule was.
Tells you how much I know about the Office product. I am wondering how
these MAILING LIST RULES are generated. Some MS magic behind the scenes?
Anyway, thank you Adam Bailey for your persistence with my nuisance problem.

You have to create a Mailing List Manager rule, but it's easy to
accidentally create one when marking a message as junk.

There are 3 different kind of rules in Entourage:

Mailing List Manager (MLM)
Junk Mail Filter
Rules (custom rules you create)

They run in the order listed above. The custom rules also run in the order
they are listed. (top runs first)

Use the MLM for all lists. Use rules for the remainder.

1) POP Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the Inbox (On My
Computer), NOT when it arrives in any other folder. Once it's moved to
another folder it won't be seen by rules.

2) IMAP Rules are meant to act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in
the IMAP INBOX, not when moved to another IMAP folder.

3) Exchange Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the
Exchange Inbox.

See "Using Rules with Entourage" for help and examples:
