RULES ONLY RUN MANUALLY - no one seems to have an answer...

B

Brian Scheele

Rules do not work as expected.

Quite a few people are having this problem. No one has an answer. Rules
work only when you manually run them. It does not matter if it is a
client-only rule or a server rule. It does not matter what the rule. I can
set up a rule that deletes all email with the word "delete" in the subject,
and it would work when I run it manually, but it will not fire on its own
automatically.

There is a bug here (not a feature) that needs to be resolved. I do not
feel I should have to pay $35 for support when the problem is a bug. I
believe everything worked fine until I installed SP2 for Office.

Someone at Microsoft or someone who knows an answer: PLEASE REPLY!

If it really IS a bug and you can convice a Microsoft support person that it
is, I suspect they'll waive the fee. They've done that for me.

I've had this happen several times and have been able to resolve it by
launching Outlook from the run line using the flag: outlook
/cleanprofile

I think it has something to do with the cached mode feature. Since we
enabled this we've had quite a few of our users experience this issue
and it's always resolved by starting outlook with the cleanprofile
flag. You only need to do this once and then you can start Oultook
normally after that.

Hope this helps....

That seems to have fixed the problem. It prompted me for a profile when I
started Outlook after adding the /cleanprofile. I ran a couple of basic
tests that worked. Thanks for the help!

I thought it was working. I am not sure what is going on here.

I have a rule that is set to delete any incoming email with the words
"[isalist]" or "[exchangelist]". They only fire when ran manually. I am
still having the problem.

I just did a test. I remove the brackets [ and ] from the rule. Still
having the problem. So now I am looking to delete only things with isalist
in the subject.

I am running cached Exchange mode.

I send myself an email with the subject, isalist. It goes straight to the
deleted items like it should. The delivery receipt message that I get with
the subject, "Delivered:isalist" is in my inbox and did not get deleted. If
I manually run the rule, then that message gets deleted at that point.

The same thing happens if I disable cached exchange mode.

It appears that only email that I send to myself is affected by the rule.

I also have a POP account with Verizon. I sent myself an email to that
account and when I clicked Send/Receive, it was properly sent to the deleted
items. But, the messages coming through my exchange server with the subject
that I am filtering are not affected by my rules unless it is an internal
email account sending the message.
