Hi David,
The MSOXMLED.EXE is designed to be transparent to users so there is no user
manual as I searched through the Office Online website and MSFT support
website.
There is an explaination in this newsgroup post:

It sounds like you have the 2003 & 2007 Office installed side by side on
the same machine? As you said "If a Word doc use Word 2007 (not 2003 which
it is presently doing).".
If that is the case, first we need to make sure the 2007 version of
MSOXMLED.EXE is the default application for XML files. It is located under
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12 (or Program Files
(x86) for x64 Windows). You can try repair the Office 2007 installation to
set the file associations back to 2007, or even need to uninstall and
re-install both 2003 and 2007 (although side by side installation of
multiple versions of Office applications is not recommended). For more
information about side by side Office installation, see this KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091
With the 2007 version of MSOXMLED.EXE correctly associated with XML file
extension, the hack provided by Colbert in that earlier post is still
valid, however, one more thing need to be done to unsure it works: need to
rename the "ddeexec" key under open to something else, like "ddeexecd.bak".
Keys need to be changed:
Rename:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XEV.GenericApp\shell\open\ddeexec
To:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XEV.GenericApp\shell\open\ddeexec.bak
Edit:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\XEV.GenericApp\shell\open\command\(Default) value
To:
"<full path to XMLSpy>" "%1"
Several things to note though:
- I don't have XMLSpy installed on my machine, so I actually tested it
against Notepad and successfully made notepad.exe as the default app for
normal XML files (non-Office XML files) by modifying the registry keys
mentioned above. Suppose XMLSpy exe take the path to the xml file as an
argument, then it will work. If it needs other forms of arguments, please
make corresponding changes to the (Default) value.
- Please backup the registry keys to be changed before taking any actions.
- I don't think this hack is a supported approach. You may also consider
contact the Office support team, who has more Office application usage
knowledge and resources than me.
Hope these information helps.
Best regards,
Jie Wang
