Run-time error '91' Object variable or With block variable not set

I receive this error message when I open Word97. The File
portion of the dropdown menu is missing, it begins with
Edit. The software program has been installed for several
years. Excel, Powerpoint, Access works correctly. Cannot
find this error listed on the Microsoft.com WebSite.
