Running Access from a CD/DVD

S

Steve Wagner

Greetings,

This is probably beginner stuff for most folks, but we would appreciate a
method for opening an Access database from a CD or other non-writeable
drive. Access wants to open a lock file and if you run from CD, it cannot
write the file. In our case, we want to build a demo CD that contains our
application and database without copying anything to a customer's
hard-drive. Is this possible?

Hi Steve,

Get a USB flash drive. As long as there is a USB port, it will act just
like a hard drive. If cost is a
factor look at Micro Center they start around $6 for 2 gig.

The application should run fine, but it will only run as read only.

CD-ROM

ROM stands for Read Only memory.

So, this issue has little, if anything to do with the lock file, but just
the fact that the cd-rom is a ready only device....

You could use a cd-rw that is formatted for read/write. But, not all
computers may be setup for this type of use.

I think for a demo I would have an installer, and simply setup and install
the files to run correctly. when you are done, you can have the user simply
un-install the demo...

I mean, the users already going to have ms-access installed, so you just
copying a file to the persons computer for it to run anway. I suggest using
the free inno installer.

I talk about using the inno installer with access here:

So, you should be able to get the application to run off of the cd, but it
will be read only...
