running an excel spreadsheet in the background

I created a program which takes a value from a cell to
another cell on a minute by minute basis. The problem is
that the program must work in the background while this
program works all day. any ideas? Right now I use active
cells in the programming which will activate in any open
excel workbook on the same computer.
