running Office 97 with XP

I have a computer that has been offline for a some time (more than 12
months). Have reinstalled the XP so it is very clean. Now I have installed
office 97 small business because the software pack had only Works (my kids
need Word for school compatability). Should I download office sp1 and sp2?
I am already having trouble sharing with the other users. The info on the
download does not list XP as being supported.

In line with what Gyorgy said, if you have a base (original) version of
Office 97 SBE it would predate the first service release. SR2b won't
install unless you already have SR 1 installed. Which version you have can
be found by starting Word, clicking Help then About. The second line on the
window that pops up will tell you that you have Microsoft Word 97. If there
is nothing immediately behind this you have pre SR1. If you have SR1
installed it will tell you. Likewise for SR2b (it will only say SR-2 not
SR-2b)

You should first download SR1 from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0B-4DA8-4FB2-80E4-CCFB8D3C1D0B&displaylang=en

and then SR2b from

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...42-602E-42B0-89D2-6BE39F1167C1&displaylang=en
(Watch URL wrap on both of these URLs)

You need to install SR1 first and then install SR2b on top of it. SR2b will
ask you for the Product ID (can be located by starting Word then clicking
Help and then About and it will be 5 numbers a dash 3 numbers or the letters
OEM a dash 7 numbers a dash and then 5 numbers.) Write down the information
before starting the updates since SR2b may fail if an Office program is
running when you enter the information at this screen.

There are some other "critical" updates (located at the very bottom of the
page that opens with the last URL above which should be installed after the
SR2b update.

Hope this helps, let us know.

Thanks, I do indeed have SR1 so I will go ahead and install the SR2. The XP
is auto updating.
