Running Office Update

T

Terry Allison

I am getting the following error:

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on
this computer. This may be happening because of one of
the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this
computer. (Yes)

There is a network problem and the detection catalog used
by the Office Update site failed to download. Go back to
the Downloads home page and try running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from
previously applied Office updates are missing from the
\Windows\Installer hidden directory on your computer. MSP
files are stored on your computer after update
installation completes because they need to be referenced
for future update operations. If the files are missing
you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result
of the same problem. Please contact Microsoft Product
Support for assistance.

You installed Office updates in the past and then
upgraded from Windows Installer version 1.0 to Windows
Installer version 1.1. For more information see the KB
article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source
if Unavailable.

How do I fix this error, so I can check for updatees
again???

Dito. I can apply updates manually and see no problems with running Office
XP. I have seen many similar posts and keep hopping for a simpler solution.

Hi Terry,

What version of Windows/Office/IE are you using?

Did you check each of the items listed to be
sure they're taken care of?

Was Office installed from a CD?

Are you using Norton System Works? If so does
it have script blocking enabled?

Are you using a 3rd party download accelerator?

Are you blocking cookies from the Officeupdate site?

Are you using a firewall product and is it set to
prompt you to allow

Since Terry does not seems to follow, I will answer for my similar problem,
following your questions.
What version of Windows/Office/IE are you using? IE 6 SP1
Did you check each of the items listed to be
sure they're taken care of?
They are there. But if I try to repair Office XP, the log shows is looking
for something call WinWordOp.msi, which I have never seen anywhere.
Was Office installed from a CD? Yes.
Are you using Norton System Works? No

Are you using a 3rd party download accelerator? No
Are you blocking cookies from the Officeupdate site? No
Are you using a firewall product and is it set to
prompt you to allow
I use a hardware fire wall in my router, for the past 3 years, which have
never interfere with this operation. Windows Update works perfectly.

I must say that this is happening with two disimilar computers, one with
W2K/SP4 plus Office 2000/SP3 Premium and another with XP/SP1 plus Office
XP/SP2. Also since I applied the last 4 security patches and with the new
web site for Office Update. Those two Office programs are working well, but
would not uninstall, and they do accept new updates or additions programs.
Thanks for your interest. Cheers
